Registration of software and databases with Rospatent
Computer programs and Database
What are the advantages of state registration?
Computer programs and databases are subject to copyright protection
Copyright arises automatically upon their creation. No registration is required for the emergence, exercise, or protection of these rights.

The rights holder may, at their discretion, register a computer program or database with the federal executive authority for intellectual property.
Perhaps since childhood you have heard the saying, "What is written with a pen cannot be cut down with an axe." The point here is not just about having a formal certificate of state registration, but that registration allows you to fix your rights: information about your program or database is entered into the relevant Registers and is considered reliable unless proven otherwise. And as you know, proving otherwise can be troublesome.

The purpose of registration is to demonstrate that, at the time of registration, the software product existed in an objective form and that you had and have a direct connection to it as the author or rights holder. This may be necessary in cases of conflicting interests or disputes over authorship of the software product.
FAQ
Is it possible to patent a computer program?
Copyright protection for a computer program covers the source code, i.e., the program is protected as a literary work, whereas patent protection covers the invention — the technology, method, or system that provides a technical effect. Thus, protection of a single object may be complex and multifaceted.
What is the procedure for registering computer programs?
State registration of computer programs consists of three stages: submission of the registration application, review of the application by the state authority, and issuance of the certificate of official registration of the computer program. Applications are reviewed by the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent). The registration application consists of a package of documents and data on physical media. It includes an application form, all necessary materials required to identify the computer program, a summary, and a receipt confirming payment of the registration fee. During the review, Rospatent examiners verify the completeness and correctness of the application and the compliance of the submitted materials with formatting standards. The review period is about one month. At the end of this period, a registration certificate is issued.
